Leyden Lewis Architecture: Joseph Schilling - Garden & Landscape Design
Anyone accustomed to living, working, or just perusing the streets of New York City has likely seen or spent time in a Joseph Schilling Landscape www.woodlandlandscapes.com. The greater metropolitan area serves as a backdrop for urban landscapes and gardens designed and crafted by Mr. Schilling.

Joseph’s designs vary greatly in scale and application. His versatile vision has created landscapes ranging from the historic brownstone residence for the French Ambassador, to the entrance gardens of the Kato building on Fifth Avenue. Many of Joseph’s projects have been featured in the press and on television programs such as MTV’s the Real World series.

His intuitive aesthetic nature is that of a romanticist. As an accomplished mason his horticulture prowess is matched by a keen understanding of hardscaping (retaining walls, stone decking, etc.) This union of skills allows Schilling to contrast curvilinear sensuous lines against handsome handcrafted masonry walls. Undulating rough-hewn surfaces articulated in serpentine lines, and sumptuous cascading focal points typify his gardens. The consonance of pure craftsmanship and elegant design appreciates the diverse plant species and textures found his horticultural compositions.

In collaboration with the Leyden Lewis Studio, Mr. Schilling is currently creating a series of “urban oasis” garden landscapes and roof top garden designs. The gardens will serve as coherent transitions from modernist architecture and interiors designed by Leyden Lewis.
